How to renew without losing the atmosphere that your customers love?
Selvä Pyy Public House is a well-known and much-loved restaurant and bar located in the heart of Äkäslompolo village. The project focused on extending the existing restaurant while improving the functionality of the space and preserving the familiar atmosphere that makes Selvä Pyy a local favourite.
The extension created additional seating and allowed the interior layout to be reorganised to improve circulation and service. The bar was relocated and redesigned as an L-shaped counter that responds to the direction of the new entrance, creating a clearer focal point and improving the flow between arrival, bar service and seating areas.
Maintaining the recognisable character of Selvä Pyy was central to the design approach. The characteristic blue wall tone was preserved and integrated into the renewed graphic identity. Inspired by the Finnish saying “Selvä pyy, sanoi Möttönen varista,” the hooded crow was reinterpreted as a slightly mystical and willful character that now appears both in the interior and across the branding.
New fixed seating areas divide the expanded space into comfortable zones while keeping the restaurant flexible and efficient for everyday service. The result is a natural continuation of Selvä Pyy — relaxed, confident and full of character.
