Kortteli, Kamppi
Transforming the upper floors of Kamppi into a new restaurant destination
Kortteli at Kamppi is a unique restaurant district located on the upper floors of Kamppi Shopping Centre in Helsinki. The project set out to transform previously underused floors into a vibrant dining destination that would attract visitors from the busy metro station and bus terminal below while drawing new audiences to the area.
Working at Suunnittelutoimisto Amerikka, the project focused on developing the spatial concept and overall identity of the restaurant district. The design strategy was to create an environment that would feel distinct from the typical shopping centre experience and encourage visitors to come to Kamppi specifically for food and social life.
The concept defined the mix of restaurants, spatial structure and overall atmosphere of the district. A comprehensive concept manual guided both the leasing process and the design development, ensuring that the final environment remained consistent with the original vision.
The result is a lively urban dining destination that brings together multiple restaurants under one coherent concept and has become an important part of Helsinki’s restaurant scene.

A Strong Concept Creates Value
By defining the identity, tenant mix and spatial framework from the start, the project created a clear foundation for both successful leasing and a distinctive restaurant destination.
A Concept to Guide Development
A detailed concept framework defined the spatial structure, tenant mix and identity of the new restaurant destination.
Designing Individual Restaurant Identities
Within the overall Kortteli concept, each restaurant was designed as a distinct environment with its own atmosphere and character. The aim was to create a collection of unique dining spaces that would feel different from one another while still belonging to the same destination.
Materials, lighting and spatial elements were carefully developed to support the identity of each restaurant concept. At the same time, the design followed the overarching framework of the district, ensuring that the restaurants formed a coherent and recognisable whole. This balance between individuality and shared identity allows Kortteli to function both as a vibrant collection of restaurants and as a unified urban dining destination.
Design as a Commercial Strategy
By defining the identity, tenant mix and spatial framework from the start, the project created a clear foundation for both successful leasing and a distinctive restaurant destination.
