The interior design for Restaurant Fly-Inn at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport focused on creating a warm and timeless environment within the dynamic context of an international airport. The design balances contemporary hospitality with a strong connection to Finnish design heritage.

A key part of the concept was the thoughtful reuse of existing Artek furniture and lighting, integrating these iconic pieces into the renewed interior. New lighting elements were developed for the space, including large pendant installations created using Artek Bilberry pendants arranged within a circular brass frame to form striking feature lights above the dining area. Additional custom light fixtures for the bar and restaurant were developed in collaboration with Saas Instruments, bringing a refined technical quality to the lighting design.

Materiality plays an important role in shaping the atmosphere. Mirrors, tiled surfaces and wooden panelling create depth and warmth, while softly plastered walls introduce a calm, tactile backdrop. Jukola panelling was used to subtly divide the space, creating zones within the open restaurant while maintaining visual continuity.

A distinctive graphic tiling detail defines the transition between surfaces on the floor. Patterned tiles meet vinyl flooring in a flowing composition that evokes the feeling of ice floating on the sea — a subtle reference to northern landscapes within the airport setting.

Together, the reuse of classic Finnish design elements, carefully crafted lighting and layered material palette create a welcoming and characterful dining environment for travellers passing through Helsinki Airport.
