Contemporary clarity meets historic elegance

Located in the historic garden square of Ovington Square in Knightsbridge, this distinguished townhouse forms part of a mid-19th century development originally built between 1844 and 1850 by Elizabeth Standerwick, widow of Frederick, Baron von Zandt. The houses surrounding the square were designed in Italian and late Grecian styles and arranged around a central garden protected under the 1851 Garden Square Act, creating one of London’s most elegant residential settings.

The project involved the complete rebuilding and reconfiguration of the seven-storey property to create a contemporary residence while carefully respecting the historic character of the listed building.

A new basement extending across the entire site incorporates a private wellness retreat with a swimming pool, jacuzzi and steam room. Above, a new two-storey rear extension built over the basement provides generous living and dining spaces that open seamlessly to external courtyards through wrap-around glazing, allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the house.

The upper floors include two luxurious master bedroom suites, two additional bedrooms and a grand drawing room. A new lift was installed to connect all levels of the house, ensuring comfortable circulation throughout the seven-storey residence. The tone of the interiors gradually lightens as one moves upward through the house, with the staircase wood veneer shifting to lighter hues toward the upper floors, culminating in bright and calm bedroom spaces filled with natural light.

The result is a refined London townhouse that balances historic architecture with contemporary spatial clarity and craftsmanship.
