Portin pirtti identity & interior design
Heritage of timber rafting translated into a contemporary cabin identity.
Portin pirtti is located in Aska, Sodankylä, within the Pyhä–Luosto National Park area, on the western bank of the Kitinen River at the rocky Porttikoski rapids. The site has a long history connected to Finland’s timber floating industry and once served as a timber floating base and residence for river supervisors.
This history inspired the visual identity of the project. A custom graphic pattern was developed from an abstract interpretation of a timber rafting log pile, referencing the role of the cabin as a former floating base. The motif appears in bespoke textiles throughout the interiors, bringing the story of the place directly into the space. The interior design is a mix of old and new furniture. New large rugs make the spaces bold and comfortable.
