A 1960s Apartment Reimagined for Contemporary Living

A carefully considered refurbishment transformed this Helsinki apartment into a cohesive, characterful home rooted in its original 1960s architecture.

At the heart of the project was a spatial reconfiguration: the kitchen was relocated to a new position, allowing it to merge seamlessly with the living area. This move opened up the apartment, creating a generous, social space where everyday life unfolds naturally.

The design balances clarity and warmth. The existing fireplace was restored and brought back into focus as a defining element within the space, anchoring the interior with a sense of continuity and permanence.

A bespoke kitchen was designed specifically for the client, responding to both functional needs and the architectural language of the apartment. Clean lines, carefully selected materials and subtle detailing create a kitchen that feels integrated rather than added.

The bathroom and toilet were fully renewed, bringing a fresh, calm atmosphere through refined material choices and a restrained palette.

Furniture and lighting were curated to sit naturally within the context of the building. Fresh Nordic pieces are combined with tones and textures that resonate with the 1960s architecture — creating a home that feels both timeless and personal.

The design balances clarity and warmth bringing joy to the everyday life

A palette of warm yellow, muted peach and soft green brings a subtle retro character to the space — gently referencing the building’s 1960s origins while remaining calm and timeless.

Combined with the oak floor and carefully considered wooden details, the tones create a warm, grounded atmosphere and a sense of quiet continuity throughout the apartment.
